Hello there! Welcome to the IRIS Vision family! 🌟 We are so glad you’re here to talk about the future of investment. If you are looking for the next big opportunity in the African market, you are in the right place!

The world of African Venture Capital (VC) has changed a lot recently. In 2021, it felt like everyone was writing checks. But today, in 2025, the game is different. According to recent data, African startups closed 122 VC deals in Q2 2025 alone. That sounds great, right? But while the number of deals is up, the way we find and fund these deals has shifted.

Many investors are still using an "old playbook" from a few years ago. If you want to succeed today, you need a fresh strategy. At IRIS Vision Capital, we see these shifts every day.

Let’s look at the 7 biggest mistakes investors are making right now and how you can fix them to build a winning portfolio!

1. Treating the Downturn as a "Temporary Dip"

Many investors are waiting for the "good old days" of 2021 to return. They think the big global funds will suddenly come back with billions of dollars.

The Mistake:
Waiting for international "tourist" VCs to return to the continent. The truth is, many of those large global funds have shifted their focus to AI in developed markets.

How to Fix It:
Stop waiting and start looking at who is actually on the ground. Today, domestic capital now makes up about 45% of fund commitments. You should focus on building relationships with local players, family offices, and regional funds. This is the "new normal." Embrace it!

2. Confusing Venture Debt with Equity

Did you know that in early 2025, venture debt actually outpaced equity VC for the first time? Nearly half of all VC capital raised in 2025 was debt.

The Mistake:
Looking at total dollar amounts and thinking the equity market is booming. If you only look at the "headline" numbers, you might miss that most mega-deals are actually loans, not stock purchases.

How to Fix It:
When you look at a startup’s pipeline, ask about their capital structure. Are they over-leveraged? Can they handle the interest? You need to underwrite companies for "blended capital" from day one. At IRIS Vision, we help you understand these complex structures through our deal flow services.

3. Ignoring the Late-Stage "Valley of Death"

Late-stage equity has almost vanished in Africa. In Q2 2025, there was only one Series C deal recorded on the whole continent.

The Mistake:
Investing in Series A or B companies and assuming a bigger fund will come along to lead the Series C. If there is no one to catch them at the next stage, your investment might get stuck.

How to Fix It:
Focus on companies that have a clear path to profitability or can be sold to a Private Equity (PE) firm. Private equity deals actually overtook venture deals for the first time in 2026! Make sure the startups you pick are "PE-ready."

4. Falling into the "Pan-African" Trap

We all love the idea of a startup that works in 54 countries. But the data shows that multi-region deals dropped from 40% to just 20% recently.

The Mistake:
Investing in startups that try to expand too fast across borders without winning their home market first. This leads to high costs and messy operations.

How to Fix It:
Go deep, not wide. Look for startups that dominate core hubs like Cairo, Lagos, Nairobi, or Johannesburg. Building a deep local network in one or two markets is much more valuable than having a "thin" presence everywhere.

5. Chasing Fintech and Climate Without a Plan

Fintech and Climate-tech are the biggest stars of 2025, taking up about 80% of all capital. But they are also very crowded.

The Mistake:
Investing in these sectors just because "that's where the money is." Much of the climate money is coming from Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) and is very specific about how it can be used.

How to Fix It:
Look for "underserved" sectors like logistics, manufacturing, and utilities. These sectors accounted for 21% of deals in 2025 and often have less competition. If you do go for Fintech, make sure you have a unique angle that doesn't just rely on high-volume consumer lending.

6. Underusing Real Exit Data

For a long time, we didn't have much data on how investors actually got their money back in Africa. Now, we have reports on over 180 documented exits.

The Mistake:
Basing your entry price on what happens in Silicon Valley or Europe. If you pay too much at the start, you might not make a profit even if the company is successful.

How to Fix It:
Use real African exit benchmarks to decide how much to pay. Look at how long it actually takes to exit (usually 6-8 years) and who the buyers are. Being realistic about exits is the best way to protect your returns!

7. Relying on Manual, Old-School Pipelines

Are you still finding deals through random emails and "coffee chats"? In 2025, that is simply too slow.

The Mistake:
Having a manual deal flow process. You miss out on the best deals because someone else used data to find them first.

How to Fix It:
Use technology to your advantage! Tools like AETHER act as the "Tinder of Fundraising." It uses intelligent matchmaking to connect LPs, GPs, and founders. By using a data-driven pipeline, you can see more deals in less time.
